Departing the Le Boat Base from Port Cassafieres |
We began our
journey of the Canal du Midi from Port Cassafieres, a Le Boat Base near the
Mediterranean Sea. Departing late afternoon, we headed northwest towards
Beziers.

There are many stone bridges across the Canal du Midi |
There are many stone bridges over the Canal du Midi, most of which are
quite narrow and low, requiring everyone onboard to duck down, so as not to
lose their heads!

Our first lock encountered at Villeneuve les Beziers |

Boats can tie-up along the banks of the Canal du Midi |
After transiting our first lock at the village of Villeneuve
les Beziers, we stopped for the night along the south bank. Boaters have the
option of staying at marinas in designated locations/towns, or tying-up along
the banks of the Canal du Midi.
Metal stakes and a hammer are provided by the
boat rental company; the stakes are pounded into the ground for mooring the
boat. A line from the bow and stern are wrapped around the stakes and tied back
to the boat cleats to hold the boat in position. At Villeneuve les Beziers, we
found some large boulders along the bank, which served nicely for securing the
lines instead of using stakes for our night's moorage.

Quaint villages and restaurants are found along the Canal du Midi |
Visiting the
villages along the Canal du Midi, provides many opportunities to see old
churches, cathedrals, charming homes; and of course, indulging in French
cuisine.

Delicious Tapas are part of the French Cuisine |
That evening, we dined at a restaurant along the canal and enjoyed a
variety of delicious tapas.
